This pond is now called Cushing Pond. In the late 1800s, around the pond and the surrounding woods, people would ice skate on the pond in the winter, picnic in the woods in the warmer months, and during the summer months, many would go swimming.
These boys are swimming au natural. I remember my grandmother telling me that when she and her girlfriends wanted to swim, they would bring along someone’s little brother to go ahead of them to see if the coast was clear of boys.
Today if you park on Cushing Street, you have access to about 19 acres at the southeastern edge of the pond for your picnics.
