Each year letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. Since launching in 1993 the National Association of Letter Carriers Help Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one day food drive, helping to fill the shelves of food pantries in cities and towns throughout the United States.
Hingham is one of those towns. The Hingham Food Pantry has, since 1993, been the beneficiary of the local letter carriers’ commitment. Their dedication coupled with the generosity of our citizens have provided the Hingham Food Pantry with over 3,800 pounds of non-perishable food from this drive every year. This year the collection will help provide for 160 local families which the Hingham Food Pantry supports. Last week 68 of those families came to the pantry, or (if unable to do so) received a food delivery and over 5,000 pounds of shelf stable canned and dry goods, dairy, bakery, meat, produce and paper products were distributed.
Due to an ever-changing economy and uncertainty about assistance programs the Hingham Food Pantry is meeting and serving new individuals and families who are experiencing hardships. We are so thankful for the community support which allows us to do this. Since our doors first opened in 1991 the community outreach has always been amazing. Hingham is a town where neighbors truly support neighbors. Please continue by having your donation of unopened unexpired non-perishable foods near your mailbox this Saturday, May 10.
Hingham Food Pantry is most in need of canned tuna, peanut butter, regular ground coffee, boxed white rice, cookies, chef boy-r-dee, beef stew and rice side dishes.
Should you need food or wish to learn more about the Hingham Food Pantry please call 781-740-8180 or email hinghamfood@gmail.com. Monetary donations are gratefully accepted at Hingham Food Pantry, 685 Main Street.
Together we can provide for one another.
