These are the Hudson brothers’ homes, William’s on the left and Augustus’ on the right, at the end of North Street near Beal. Both brothers held patents for photographic improvements but William was the prominent photographer around Hingham and most likely took this picture about 1860. Augustus was a cabinet maker and ornamental painter. It was he who painted the original Torrent Sign over the West Hingham Fire Station and carved the little fireman sitting on top of the sign. The water is the official Town Swamp, now completely overgrown with vegetation. The photo is from the Judy Kimball Collection at the Hingham Historical Society.
