Way Back Wednesday: Hingham’s Sledding Streets 1930

February 19, 2025 By Geri Duff

This is a photograph of Malcolm Newell. He lived on Leavitt Street across from Winter street. For many years the Town of Hingham blocked off Irving and Winter Streets to allow children to sled or ski down from both. We are guessing that “Mac” is about 5 or 6 here which places the date in the 1930s. He is on a Flexible Flyer sled which had been around for about 50 years at that time. The photograph is from the archives of the Hingham Historical Society.
