January 20, 1923, the Hingham Girl and Hingham Boys Scouts joined forces and held a Winter Carnival on the Cadet Grounds, now Derby Academy, on Burdett Avenue. About 75 Scouts were present to participate in the 100 yard dash on snowshoes, the 100-yard dash on skis, ski jumping, obstacle race on snowshoes, potato race on snowshoes and sled race. (The races were girls against girls and boys against boys.) After the sports, the Scouts enjoyed hot cocoa and donuts provided by the Hingham Girl Scout Council around a huge bonfire. This photo of a Girl Scout with a bugle and another preparing a small fire is marked “Winifred Brooks” but does not say which one she is. The photo is from the Hingham Girl Scout House Archives.
