Hingham had several primary schools in town that were very similar. This one was built in 1850. The Fort Hill School at 56 Fort Hill Street is sometimes mistaken for the Canterbury School. Lucy Harden, who lived on North Street, was the teacher here in the late 1800s. Today it is a private residence with a small porch added on to the right side. This photo is from the book ‘Hingham Old & New’ published by the Hingham Tercentenary Committee in 1935. George W. Stetson took all the photographs in the book and in it Mason Foley said that there were plans to build additional schools to alleviate crowding.
