Way Back Wednesday: Former Governor Long’s home

April 16, 2025 By Geri Duff

This was the home of Massachusetts Governor John D. Long. In 1957 the Town of Hingham accepted the gift of the building and 11 acres of land from the estate of Dr. Margaret Long as a memorial to her father who died in 1915. Known as Windholm, the house was torn down in the 1960s. The property today is a bird sanctuary for waterfowl with a small portion used as a town tree nursey. Check the Town of Hingham’s conservation website for a description of the scenic views and the best spot to quietly birdwatch. It is best to park at the town lots at the harbor and walk up Ship Street to Cottage between #55 and #43 as parking is limited on the street. This post card is in the archives of the Hingham Historical Society.
