The select board this week proclaimed Wednesday, Dec. 10, as Human Rights Day in the Town of Hingham in recognition of the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 and this year’s theme, “Human rights, our everyday essentials.”
This is considered to be a “milestone document proclaiming the inalienable rights of every individual regardless of race, color, religion, gender, language, or other status.”
Human Rights Day serves as “an opportunity to reflect on the principles of justice, equality, and freedom, which are essential to the well-being of our society and calls upon individuals, communities, and institutions to reaffirm their dedication to upholding human rights, promoting peace, and eradicating discrimination and inequality,” the proclamation states.
