OPINION: “You’ve Gotta Have Heart”

January 13, 2026 by Glenn Mangurian

You’ve gotta have heart
Miles ‘n miles ‘n miles of heart
Oh, it’s fine to be a genius of course
But keep that old horse
Before the cart
First you’ve gotta have heart
From “Damn Yankees”, the 1958 American musical film

Over the past six months there have been numerous comments by dedicated Town leaders and members of the public (including myself) regarding the proposed new Center for Active Living (CAL). The comments have often been focused on numbers such as senior population growth, building size, parking spaces, facility utilization, project cost, tax payer impact etc. These are all relevant considerations, however, the proposal is not solely about numbers.

Last Friday I read Rory Earley’s poignant Opinion essay in the Anchor. Thank you Rory for reminding me (and others) that the CAL is about people and not just spreadsheets. Here in America, many have the privilege of aging into their 70s and well beyond. The majority of the potential beneficiaries of the CAL are seniors who have lived in Hingham for over forty years (some over fifty years). They have raised a family, paid taxes and lived vibrant lives. As a disabled Hingham resident of four decades, I am one of them. Many of us are less independent than we once were and aware of our changing emotional and physical health. Of course, health and wellness may change gradually or suddenly. For example, some lose a spouse to illness and must deal with new loneliness. Others retire and struggle to adjust to their new circumstances and identity. The CAL is a place where kindness and dignity flourish.

The staff offers a plethora of informative classes, exercising opportunities and varied social activities. You can even enjoy a communal lunch to share conversation. Let’s not forget that it is the people, staff and participants, who create a warm, welcoming environment for all regardless of individual history or financial status. In Hingham, many things are important but few things really matter. The CAL is one of those things that really matters. So yes, “You’ve, you gotta have heart”. Be kind because that’s who we are.
