This past Sunday, two Hingham High School Students sang in the winter concert of the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus of Tenors and Basses. Junior Nicholas Roche and sophomore Ethan Warhaftig are members of the prestigious chorus that brings together talented vocalists across the region for weekly practices and multiple performances throughout the year.

The Boston-based, Grammy Award-winning Handel and Haydn Society has been performing Baroque and Classical music for 209 consecutive seasons, longer than any other performing arts organization in the United States. In addition to its flagship adult performing ensemble that offers an annual series of performances at Symphony Hall, Handel and Haydn sponsors multiple youth choruses, including the Chorus of Tenors and Basses.

These youth choruses give young vocalists an opportunity to connect with other musicians and receive weekly direction and instruction from accomplished music faculty. There are numerous performance opportunities throughout the year. For example, the Chorus of Tenors and Basses recently performed at Symphony Hall for a pre-concert reception before the Handel and Haydn Messiah. They are also slated to perform the Duruflé Requiem alongside the Boston University Singers this coming April.

In addition to singing with Handel and Haydn, both Ethan (tenor) and Nicholas (bass) will represent Hingham High School at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Southeastern Senior District Festival in January. They were also both extended invitations to audition for the All-State Chorus which will be held in March. Nicholas is part of the Hingham High School Chorus and recently performed in the HHS production of Little Shop of Horrors. Ethan is a member of the HHS Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band.

Handel and Haydn invites young musicians to learn more about its youth chorus groups, with opportunities for students from second through twelfth grades. The Chorus of Tenors and Basses, meets on Saturdays for rehearsal and music theory instruction. Their new semester starts on January 13.
