The Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP) invites the community to its Public Power Open House on Saturday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 31 Bare Cove Park Drive, Hingham. The event is part of Public Power Week, a nationwide celebration recognizing the benefits of community-owned utilities. To mark the occasion, the Municipal Light Board adopted a proclamation honoring Public Power Week and reaffirming the value of HMLP’s locally owned and operated utility.
HMLP’s Open House will give residents a behind-the-scenes look at their local electric light plant, with opportunities to connect with staff, explore equipment, and learn more about safe and sustainable electricity.
Highlights will include:
- Electric Vehicle Ride & Drive – Test drive the latest EVs with Hingham Drives Electric
(advance registration encouraged on Eventbrite) - Electric Bike Test Rides – Take a bike for a spin with Fifield eBikes
- EV Showcase – View a variety of electric vehicles up close and speak with their owners
- Touch-a-Truck & Demonstrations – Climb aboard a bucket truck and meet a lineworker.
- Family-Friendly Fun Activities – Lawn games, face painting, and pumpkin decorating
- Food, Music, Giveaways, and more!
“Public Power Week is a celebration of what makes Hingham’s utility unique — we’re owned by the people we serve,” said Tom Morahan, HMLP General Manager. “This Open House is a chance for families to learn about the benefits of public power firsthand.”
The event is free and open to the public. Residents are encouraged to bring family and friends for a day of discovery, fun, and community connection.
