Hingham High School Graduate Rows Across the Atlantic

January 12, 2026 Submitted by Doug McCaig

Ryan Mulfur is a 2020 Graduate of Hingham High School. He was a captain of the Hingham High School Rowing team and now, along with his three teammates, is racing across the Atlantic, unassisted, in a rowboat in an event called “The World’s Toughest Row”.

As of this writing Ryan’s team, Team Seneca Navy is 4th out of 43 competitors having departed from La Golerma in the Canary Islands and heading for English Harbor in Antigua. They have rowed 1958 miles with 704 miles to go and can be followed at worldstoughestrow.com – The World’s Toughest Row.

After rowing at Hingham, Ryan followed in the footsteps of one of his coaches, Austin Letorney to join the highly competitive mens rowing program at Hobart College where he became team2023 and captain and recipient of both the Wejskittel Rowing Award (The S. Ford Weiskittel Rowing Award is presented to the Hobart oarsman who in his all-around performance, has proven to be most valuable to his team) and the Hanna Award for Excellence (This award is presented to a senior whose career as a Hobart student-athlete has been exceptional and marked by dedication to our community, exceptional academic achievement, trustworthy leadership and dependability as a teammate). In a remarkable twist, Ryan received the Wejskittel Rowing Award during two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) in a parallel contribution that of Hingham’s Letorney who won the same award at Hobart during the 205 and 2017 seasons.

Mulfur and Hobart teammates organized their effort as an intense challenge with a stated goal of raising money for their selected charity “To provide opportunities for youth to pursue better version of themselves.” In this effort, Mulfur is joined by teammates Dave Ranney, Anthony Carella, and Moritz Marchart. Information about their team and opportunities to donate can be found at Home | Team Seneca Navy.

In a poignant Hingham moment, the team broadcast from their rowing boat at roughly 1000 miles from their destination in Antigua. Arduously, seeking motivation to keep going, they posted videos of their individual proclamations regarding those in their lives who they looked up to as mentors and motivators.

In the clip linked below, while in the middle of the Atlantic, the team calls out Hingham’s own Austin Letorney. Letorney, who was a standout at Hingham having captained the Harbormen and won the State Championship here, went on to power Hobart to consecutive Liberty League and NIRC Championships. He continued his career as a member of the US Rowing Team representing the United States in the World Championships. Letorney has since married another former member of the Hingham High School Rowing team, Olivia Vita the first ever female captain of a Hingham boy’s athletic team.
