This Sunday, October 19, Hingham High Crew will send a contingent of their top rowers to compete in the largest rowing event in the world, the 60th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta. This year, three Hingham boats were selected to compete in the prestigious event, and Hingham athletes have spent months preparing to give their best performances. The Hingham entries and times are as follows:
Event 50: Women’s Youth Eights @ 9:05 AM (Hingham is Bow 64)
Event 52: Women’s Youth Four @ 10:02 AM (Hingham is Bow 50)
Event 57 Men’s Youth Four @ 12:13 PM (Hingham is Bow 79)
The best places to watch the incredible event are at the Eliot Street Bridge – a popular spot due to the action-packed turns and also the Regatta headquarters, Riverbender (formerly Reunion Village) – a great party atmosphere with food and drinks, The Boston University Bridge – for views of the start line, The John W. Weeks Footbridge and Anderson Memorial Bridge – both of which feature sharp turns, and the Western Avenue Bridge – for a fantastic view of the Powerhouse Stretch – a straightaway where crews will be putting the pedal to the metal. For more information about viewing locations or all of the events you can attend, there is a ton of information on the HOTC website: https://hocr.org/spectators/ For those unable to attend in person, most of the races may also be viewed online here: https://hocr.org/the-regatta/livestreams/

Hingham boats and crews can typically be recognized by their red oars, red hulls, and red and white uniforms. Hingham generally sends a few boats a year to compete in this amazing event. This year, Hingham is sending 16 rowers and 3 coxswains to represent our town. Weather reports for Sunday’s races are currently very favorable, with plenty of sun, mixed clouds, and no precipitation in the forecast.

The 4,702 meter race course passes 7 bridges, and features many tight turns. Because all three Hingham boats will be racing in crowded fields (with 86 entries in each Hingham race), the competition promises to be fast and furious, while the massive group of spectators line both sides of the river for miles in either direction. It’s truly a uniquely Boston experience, and an opportunity to see how Hingham’s best rowers match up against the best rowers from all over the planet.

At 9:05, Hingham will be represented in the Women’s Youth 8+ by coxswain Emily Gu, stroke Emme Beaudoin, Natalie Shaw, Louisa Orth, Eliza Powers, Sophia Santarelli, Thea Migliaccio, Jane Melia, and bow Bianca Kiley.
At 10:02, coxswain Maddie Owens, stroke Stella Gutierrez, Izzy Wagner, Coco Prohm, and Annie Sargent will lead the charge for Hingham in the Women’s Youth 4+.
Finally, at 12:13 PM, coxswain Brent Strauss, stroke Hanley Stroka, Lachlan Knies, Lucas Magili, and Nicholas Mangili will enter the fray for the boys in the Men’s Youth 4+.
HHS boats finishing in the top half of their respective races will automatically qualify Hingham for entry in the same event at next year’s Head of the Charles. All other selections will be made by lottery.

The world’s largest multi-day rowing event, the Head of the Charles features 11,000 athletes in 2,000 boats from all over the world. Each year, more than 400,000 spectators come to Boston to watch along the shores of the 3-mile course as it winds its way through numerous turns and under 7 bridges.
Last weekend, Hingham’s coxswains participated in a run-through of the course to ensure they are prepared for the challenges along the waterway. Next Sunday, be sure to come out and cheer for our rowers as they take on teams from all over the world!
