Foster School Principal Matthew Scheufele announced today his plans to retire at the end of the current school year – effective Aug. 1.
”I have been blessed throughout my career with fantastic students, incredible staff, and supportive families and administrators, who I consider family,” he told Foster staff and families when he shared the news this morning.
Supt. of Schools Katie Roberts announced Scheufele’s retirement to the wider Hingham Public Schools community in an email.
In the coming weeks, HPS administration will seek input from staff, students, families, and community members to inform the search for a new principal of Foster School.
“The district plans to name a new principal in early spring to allow ample time for overlap with Principal Scheufele, ensuring a smooth leadership transition,” Roberts said.
Scheufele began his teaching career as a grades 3-5 classroom teacher at the Federal Furnace Elementary School in the Plymouth Public Schools.
From 2005-2007, he served as the teaching vice principal of the Nathaniel Morton Elementary School in Plymouth before transitioning to the role of principal of Centerville Elementary School in the Barnstable Public Schools, where he attended school as a child.
“During his tenure in Hingham, Principal Scheufele has led his staff and students through the construction of the new Foster school, facilitating complex logistics that included a mid-year move,” Roberts said.
Scheufele shared that he is particularly proud to have had the opportunity to work with the community to get the new school open during his tenure in Hingham.
“I have also been proud of the work our staff has completed in bringing about a robust system of academic and social-emotional supports for students,” he said.
“We are incredibly grateful to Principal Scheufele for his extraordinary efforts to ensure the successful opening of the new Foster building. His expertise in operations and logistics ensured a smooth transition for students and staff who now enjoy this beautiful new learning space,” Roberts said in her email. “Over the course of the 2025-2026 school year, we will celebrate Principal Scheufele’s contributions to the Hingham community and recognize his 31 years overall in education.”
