Food Scrap Recycling

Compost your food scraps with Black Earth and earn money for your school!

Hingham residents have multiple options when it comes to disposing of their food scraps.  If backyard composting isn’t sustainable or appealing to you, consider a pickup service.  The Hingham Department of Public Works has partnered with Black Earth to subsidize a portion of the cost related to residential food scrap pickup for Hingham residents. Residents who want to take advantage of this program should click here to learn more and sign up. Mention one of Hingham’s schools in the referral field and Black Earth will provide a $10 credit to that school’s Green Team. While the school Green Teams can benefit from this program, it is open to all and not restricted to households with students in the Hingham Public Schools.

With the Black Earth program, customers have the option for weekly or bi-weekly pickup. Almost all food items can be included in your pickup, including those that are normally excluded from backyard compost bins such as oil, meat, cheese, and bones.

As a Black Earth customer, you will get one free bag of compost per year to use in your garden.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection In Hingham

Hingham residents have multiple opportunities this spring to responsibly dispose of these items. Hingham’s household hazardous waste collection will be on May 16, but other collection events on the South Shore are also open to Hingham residents. Advanced registration is required.
