The select board this week handed out certificates of appreciation to several individuals who helped make the July 2 drone show at Hingham Harbor as part of the town’s Fourth of July celebration a big success.
These included Harbor Development Committee Chair Marco Boer, who suggested the drone show in place of the traditional fireworks due to environmental issues; Historical Society Executive Director Deirdre Anderson; Hingham Police Sgt. Jeff Kilroy; Harbormaster Kenneth Corson; and DPW Supt. Ashley Sanford.
The HDC — in partnership with the Hingham Historical Society, Hingham Lions Club, and with generous underwriting support from the Mike Reilly Classic — presented the event.
“I was so moved to see the community come together for the drone show; it was wonderful to see,” Select Board member Liz Klein said. “It was just as we had envisioned — old and new friends and people new to Hingham and from all over the South Shore enjoying the harbor.”
The certificates were awarded in appreciation of the outstanding contributions made by each recipient and their role in bringing the community together “in a joyful and memorable way.”
Select Board Chair William Ramsey commended drone show, parade, and Hingham Recreation Road Race organizers for their efforts in making the Fourth of July celebration in Hingham a true community event attracting thousands of participants and spectators.
“So much is done behind the scenes that nobody knows about,” he said.
The meeting was held in the new public safety facility off Rte. 3A following tours of the building by the public.
Police Chief David Jones said the new facility has already been “a big quality of life boost” for Hingham police officers and that recent applicants for positions on the force said the new building was one of the reasons they were interested in a position with the Hingham Police Department.
Deputy Fire Chief David Levenson said North Fire Station staff will move into the building in the next couple of weeks, “offering a lot more space than we had before. We’re just waiting our turn and should be in the new building shortly.”
