Earlier this month, a screening team consisting of representatives from HPS administration, school committee, parents, and staff interviewed prospective candidates for the permanent principal of Hingham High School. After a semi-finalist round of interviews and comprehensive reference checking, three finalists were invited for site visits during which candidates met with faculty, parents, students, HPS leadership, and community members. One candidate withdrew from the applicant process, leaving two finalists.

Today, we are pleased to announce that Dr. John Buckey, Ed.D., currently serving as interim principal, has been selected as the permanent principal of Hingham High School. Dr. Buckey looks forward to continued collaboration with HHS faculty, students, and community members, and will continue work in support of the district’s strategic plan and Portrait of a Learner initiatives.

Dr. Buckey began his career as a Spanish teacher and foreign language department coordinator at The Lexington School in Lexington, Kentucky. He later served as Principal and Assistant Principal at Littleton High School from 2001 to 2008, and as Principal of Nantucket High School from 2008 to 2020. Prior to joining Hingham High School as Interim Principal, Dr. Buckey served as Superintendent for Marblehead Public Schools from 2020-2023.

He holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, a Master of Education in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts, post-baccalaureate studies in Educational Administration from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Spanish and Secondary Education from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky.

Dr. Buckey holds Massachusetts licensure as a Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent (All Levels) and Principal/Assistant Principal (9–12), with a Sheltered English Immersion Administrator Endorsement.
