Summer Street was closed at Route 3A and Rockland Street this afternoon due to a crash involving a Tesla driven by a teenager and an MBTA Greenbush commuter rail train that occurred at about 1:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Summer Street near the Nantasket Junction stop in Hingham.
MBTA Transit Police Supt. Richard Sullivan told the Hingham Anchor in response to an email inquiry that “a 17-year-old driver of a private motor vehicle intentionally entered into the opposite lane, drove around the safety devices (which were fully functional and engaged) and drove into the side of an oncoming MBTA commuter rail train.”
The driver sustained a non-life threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. “The vehicle sustained major damage and has been towed from the scene. There were no reported injuries onboard the affected train,” according to Sullivan.
Photos of the accident shown by a local TV news station showed a shattered windshield and a charger handle sticking out of the vehicle’s charge port.
Shuttle buses were used temporarily to transport passengers.
First responders and MBTA Transit Police were at the scene.
