The select board has proclaimed Aug. 9 Farmers Market Day in Hingham. August 3-9 is Massachusetts Farmers Market week.

The Hingham Farmers Market, now in its 46th season, is the third oldest market in the state, creating “a festive open air setting which enhances community spirit and civic pride by offering a natural place for community gathering,” states the proclamation read by the select board Tuesday night.

The proclamation also notes that farmers markets “help heighten public awareness of the agricultural diversity of Massachusetts and the benefits of buying local and preserving open space.”

HFM President Bev Vernon, who accepted this position following the untimely death of former HFM President Mark Cullings a year ago, was present at the meeting.

“We welcome everyone in town to celebrate with us on Aug. 9,” Vernon said. “To do this without Mark is not easy, but it’s something he would have wanted us to do, and we’re grateful for the community’s support.”

Select Board Chair William Ramsey told Vernon that Cullings “would be so proud of the way you stepped in and took the lead. The market is a wonderful community gathering spot and is part of the fabric of our town.”
