Artisans in the Square is pleased to feature a tribute to Janine Senatore. Janine was a former member at Artisans, a lifelong creator, a gifted artist, a dedicated nurse, and a cancer warrior who lost the battle but left the world a better and more beautiful place. Janine sadly passed away in November of 2024 after a recurrence of breast cancer. Artisans in the Square is honored to be the ambassadors of Janine’s remaining pottery work, which is featured in our front windows for the month of June, as well as throughout the store, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Doctors Without Borders, a charity that was close to Janine’s heart.
In Janine’s own words, she shares with us her passion for art, pottery and life. We at Artisans are so very grateful to have been part of Janine’s journey and to now help share her legacy.

“I like to think as an artist, I cover a bit of ground. I enjoy making both purely functional work and purely decorative work, and I have been striving to meld both forms into each piece. Function and decoration – cut out patterns in fruit bowls, drawing with glaze on mugs, bowls, including the addition of dancing and swirling handles to jars and faces on urns. Production potters boggle my mind, and I openly envy their skill, and half-heartedly shoot at making the same thing over and over. Ultimately, I allow myself the indulgence of letting the piece make itself. I shoot for good craftsmanship, balance, beauty and that certain something that makes the piece interesting and recognizable as an object only I could have created.
I am so very grateful to pottery. It has opened up a world of absolutely fabulous people, artists and dear friends for me. Pottery is always there for me, like a true friend. It’s been my confidant, therapist, comforter, instigator and challenger. It has given me a unique way to discover, express and define myself. It has provided me with something beautiful to share with others. But honestly and most of all, I just love the way it often – no – most times, has the upper hand, until it reveals the final surprise.”

Thank you for writing about our cousin, Janine. She was fortunate to find her niche, not only in pottery, but in the wonderful people she came to know. Her work was a unique as she was! So nice to have this article about her.
