Field hockey captains Libby Koyce and Kaylie Fabrizio co-coach a Hingham youth team
The circle of life is happening right now within the Hingham High field hockey program.
Let me explain.
Senior captains Libby Koyce and Kaylie Fabrizio were teammates a decade ago on one of the first youth teams put together by the Hingham Youth Field Hockey program. Out of the 16 girls from that group, Fabrizio and Koyce were the only ones to make it all the way up the ladder as they begin their final tourney journey with the Harborwomen.
“It doesn’t feel like 10 years,” said Koyce. “It all started just working on skills once a week and it grew from there. I stuck with it because the group was really fun and it’s a sport that just seemed to hit home with me. I played a bunch of sports and field hockey was the one that stuck.”

Their connection with the HYFH program remains as strong as ever. In addition to playing for the high school team, Koyce and Fabrizio are giving back to the game as co-head coaches of a fourth and fifth grade team in the town youth league.
“It’s been a really fun season,” said Koyce. “It’s amazing to watch them start to develop their skills and grow as players. It can’t believe that I hear some of the things that our coaches have always told us over the years like ‘Spread out!’ or ‘Cut to the ball!’ come out of my mouth during a game.”
Hearing that is music to the ears of Hingham field hockey head coach Susan Petrie, who recently picked up her 250th career coaching win.
“We are so lucky to have such a great feeder system sending players up to the high school program. Every year I get a talented group of players (coming to the team) because of the instruction they get at the youth level,” said Petrie. “When the girls come up here, I’m coaching them instead of teaching the basics of the game.”

She added, “I love seeing the high school players coach the young girls. The players have an instant connection with the older girls and they already know one another when they come to see the high school games. It’s a full-circle moment for all of us.”
Fabrizio is continuing her family tradition of coaching the game.
“My mom was my youth coach up through the eighth grade. She also played in college and in an adult league, so I’ve always been around field hockey,” said Fabrizio, whose older sister, Taylor, also played for Hingham. “I like how the kids have all this energy and are always excited to learn new skills and play in the games.”
Fabrizio and Koyce both play forward. If all goes to plan, they’ll have five more games together as teammates and then depart the program as state champions. Hingham earned the fifth seed in the Division 2 tournament bracket and will start the playoffs with a home game Saturday at 3 p.m. against #28 Melrose High.
The duo will have a big say whether the team can get back to the state finals for the second year in a row.
“Libby and Kaylie have been playing field hockey together for a decade now and you can see that in the connection they have on the field. They always seem to know where the other is on the field because they’ve been playing together so long,” said Petrie.
