No need to squeeze a trip to New Hampshire or Vermont into your busy fall schedule. A quick drive to Norwell makes for a perfect autumn outing!

One of our family’s favorite fall traditions is hiking among the beautiful foliage at Norris Reservation, followed by brunch at The Tinker’s Son.

Part of The Trustees of Reservations, Norris Reservation is a beautiful stretch of conservation land along the North River. Winding trails weave through the woods and around ponds, offering plenty of opportunities to explore without the crowds. With trails of varying lengths, there’s something for everyone.

We like to hike the entire loop, starting with the McMullan Trail, which leads to a charming boathouse along the North River. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a family photo.
The Gordon Pond Trail features a boardwalk around a pond, with plenty of places along the way to explore and look for wildlife.

While the trails are lovely year-round, fall is especially spectacular, with colorful leaves reflecting in the water. Dogs are welcome on leashes, and the reservation is a great destination for families with kids, although the trails are not stroller-friendly.
After our hike, we often head to nearby The Tinker’s Son for brunch. The restaurant’s weekend buffet runs Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an impressive selection of breakfast and lunch favorites, including a carving station and a plentiful dessert spread.

My boys love the pearlized sugar waffles, Irish sausages, macaroni and cheese, and dumplings. They also insist that the made-to-order omelets are the best they’ve ever had! A traditional à la carte brunch menu is also available.
The friendly staff always go out of their way to make families feel welcome, even providing coloring sheets and crayons to keep little hands busy. Meanwhile, live Irish music, Guinness on tap, and a Bloody Mary bar help make brunch just as enjoyable for the adults.
If you’re looking for a scenic fall hike, a family-friendly adventure, or simply an excuse to enjoy a fun weekend brunch, this Norwell outing is well worth the trip.
