They give you 80 minutes of regulation time in high school girls soccer, and Hingham needed every bit of it Tuesday night, scoring on the road at Duxbury High with under one minute left to salvage a 1-1 tie against the Dragons.

The tie gives Hingham (13-1-2 overall, 12-1-1 in league action) a foothold in the race with Duxbury (12-1-3, 11-1-2) for the Patriot League Keenan Division championship. If they can end the regular season with wins over Plymouth South, Marshfield, and then Whitman-Hanson, Hingham will be solo champions.

Duxbury took the lead in the first half when senior captain Annabelle Maganello used some trickery to score on a direct kick from 35 yards out. Hingham spent the remainder of the game in chase mode and finally caught up when freshman Sara Maroney flipped a pass over Duxbury’s back line, and senior captain Taylor Bello was there to put a shot into the top half of the net for the game-tying score.

Senior captain Taylor Bello scored for Hingham Tuesday night in a 1-1 tie against Duxbury.

“I saw Taylor on my right side (on the goal), and I knew if I could get the ball to her, she’d be able to capitalize on it,” said Maroney.

The younger sister of senior Maeve Maroney, Sara Maroney has been a nice addition to Hingham’s front line this season. She’s very quick on her feet and uses pressure to give defenders a hard time when they try to control the ball.

“I try to use my speed to make things happen,” Maroney said.

The way her team competed for all 80 minutes made Hingham head coach April Tremante very pleased.

“These girls will never give up,” said Tremante. “This is more than about soccer. This was a life lesson that when you get knocked down, you keep getting back up, try harder, and never quit.”

Hingham girls soccer has a record of 13-1-2 with three games left in the regular season.

Bello’s impact on the game before her goal was just as impressive on the other end of the field as a center back. Duxbury has some talented forwards, and Hingham head coach April Tremante thought the best way to counteract that threat was to put Bello in the back to control things.

“When Taylor is in the back, nobody is getting by her. Duxbury has a lot of strong offensive players, and we knew we needed Taylor back there,” said Tremante about moving her top scoring option to the other end of the field. “Any 1v1 battle, she is going to stop them. She knew how much this game meant, so she was absolutely willing to do whatever was best for the team.”

Playing center back is not new to Bello, who registered her 50th goal and 100th career point earlier this month. That’s the position she plays on her club soccer team and also where the University of Connecticut women’s soccer team envisions her playing when she arrives on campus next year.

“I’ll do whatever is best for the team,” said Bello. “I’m comfortable playing either position.”
