An extraordinary season from the Hingham High golf team will wrap up Monday, Oct. 26, with an opportunity for the Harbormen to bring home the Division 1 state championship.

Hingham will send its top six golfers to Wellesley Country Club on Monday to compete for the state championship. They qualified by taking third at Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton in the Division 1 South Sectionals, behind winner Xaverian (294) and Wellesley High (311).

The top three teams from each sectional qualifier advance to the state championship. Hingham (311) finished in a tie with Braintree High for the final qualifying spot. On the 18th hole, sophomore Emery Olin knocked his second shot onto the green, 20 feet from the pin. His putt was a foot short of the hole, and he tapped in for par to tie the team score.

Sophomore Emery Olin putts to within feet of the cup on the par 4, 449 yds 2nd hole. Because of the shotgun start, this was his last hole of the day and made par to secure the tie and move to the tiebreaker.

“The 2nd is the hardest hole on the entire golf course, and I knew going in that I needed a par,” said Olin.

Officials matched scorecards to break the tie, and the +11 score of 81 posted by the No. 5 player, senior captain Sebby Arata, officially gave Hingham the victory.

“Tournaments like this one are always close. The score can flip at the last minute, and you are either in or out,” said Hingham head coach Eric Gill. “It was exciting.”

Senior captain tees off at the par 3 3rd hole, which he parred to keep Hingham in 3rd place.

Hingham’s six golfers finished within 11 strokes of one another. Mike Rogers and Olin tied for 12th overall with a 77. Liam Jordan (15th, 78), Andrew Davidson (16th, 79), and Arata (19th) all placed in the top 20 finishers. Connor Elia came back to the clubhouse with an 88.

Just like the tiebreaker, everything has seemed to break right for Hingham this season. They won the Patriot League title with a match record of 16-1. B.C. High defeated them in the final week of the regular season for Hingham’s lone loss.

“I think we had some pretty high expectations coming into the season” with the talent of the new players joining up with some experienced seniors, said Gill. “To make it to the state finals out of the D1 South sectional is really hard to do. I already consider us winners.

Freshman Mike Rogers gained much needed playoff experience and finished the round at +7 and tied with Emery Olin for low scorers for Hingham.

“Now we’ll go to the state finals, play our best, and just live the experience. If we play great golf, we’ll have a shot.”

This is the first time in three years that Hingham has gone to the state finals as a team. Senior captain Liam Jordan was a freshman on that team, and the goal now is to finish four great years with his best round of golf.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling right now,” said Jordan. “The finish was a little too close for comfort, but getting to the state finals feels incredible. I’m excited for Monday to see what we can do. Our goal was to get to the state finals, and everything else now is a bonus.”
