Since its founding in 2023, Hingham Arts Alliance has supported arts initiatives across Hingham, from community events such as the Hingham Arts Walk to arts performances and workshops in the Hingham schools. The organization is now entering its next chapter with Gina Jamieson and Emily Kuperstein serving as its new co-presidents, building on the foundation established by HAA founders and outgoing presidents Ann Marie Schembri and Yvette Kanter.

“It is an absolute privilege to lead this organization,” said Jamieson. “Ann Marie and Yvette have built an incredible foundation, and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to build upon what they created.” The new presidents credit Schembri and Kanter with identifying the need for an arts-focused support and advocacy organization in Hingham, assembling the key people to help bring it to life, and taking HAA from idea to established community organization with real impact in a short timeframe. They look forward to continuing the founders’ legacy and expanding HAA’s reach and recognition.

For both Jamieson and Kuperstein, the arts are deeply personal. Their backgrounds are different, but they share a belief that a vibrant arts community can strengthen connections, create opportunities, and enrich life in Hingham.

Jamieson credits HAA as being one of her first points of entry into the Hingham community. Shortly after moving to Hingham with her husband in 2024, she attended an HAA fundraiser and decided to join the HAA board. With a professional background in the arts, she brings a wealth of information and arts experience to Hingham. She spent more than a decade working as a professional actor in New York, including developing new plays and working as a teaching artist at NYU. She later moved into arts and cultural nonprofit leadership, currently as the Special Projects Producer at Emerson College’s Media and Arts Ventures, where she curates, develops and produces public-facing arts and cultural programs.

Kuperstein has experienced the life-changing power of the arts through the eyes of her son who attends Hingham Middle School and will participate in his fifteenth theater production this fall. While attending a production of A Christmas Carol at the Company Theatre in Norwell several years ago, Emily’s son turned to her and said, “I want to do that, Mama.” He has been on the stage ever since. “Watching that one experience ignite something in him that has become such an important part of who he is has shown me first hand how transformative exposure to the arts can be for a child,” Kuperstein said.

Professionally, Kuperstein is a Human Resources leader whose career has focused largely on mission-driven organizations, and she sees her work with HAA as an extension of her professional interest in strengthening organizations and creating environments where people can grow and thrive. “I want every child in Hingham to have opportunities to discover what makes them light up,” she said, noting that “children need many different places to find their passion, their people, and their voice.”
Looking ahead, the new presidents hope HAA can expand its support for local artists and students, increase awareness and advocacy for the arts, and continue to build partnerships throughout the community. HAA already provides scholarships for students as well as grants and opportunities for artists, educators, and community organizations.
They also want to make it easier for residents to participate in HAA. The organization is launching a “Friends of the Hingham Arts Alliance” program designed to give community members opportunities to volunteer and participate at different levels. “You don’t have to join a board or make an enormous time commitment to contribute,” Kuperstein said.
“Hingham already has an incredibly strong arts community,” Jamieson noted. “What we need is the organization, visibility, and participation to make sure people understand just how valuable it is and continue to strengthen it.”
