In the late 1800s families from Northern Europe began to settle in Hingham. An 1894 Business directory lists Styze Damstra as an employee of W. W. Blackmar of Martin’s Lane which we know as the World’s End Dairy Farm. Mr. Damstra went on to own his own Dairy Farm in West Hingham. Situated near the intersection of North and West Streets was the meadow of Damstra filled with the cows of his Fort Hill Dairy.
Writer Elizabeth Coatsworth stated that he and other Hollanders delivered excellent milk and cream every day from door to door. Mr. Damstra must have been very successful as there is a letter ‘D’ embossing the blinders shielding the horse’s eyes and the wagon is highly polished. This delightful postcard was discovered between the pages of an old Hingham Town Report.
Photo may have been taken in front of St Paul’s Parish House on North Street.
