Stephen F. Downey III, of Hingham, Massachusetts, passed away on September 24, 2026, in Hingham. He was 82. Born on December 1, 1943, in Newark, New Jersey, Stephen lived a life defined by service, devotion to family, and a deep love of the sea.
Stephen joined the United States Coast Guard at the age of 17 and went on to serve for 20 years. His commitment to helping others and saving lives was a central part of who he was. That same spirit of service continued in later years through his work with the Hingham Harbormaster, where he served for several years. The water remained one of the great constants in his life, and he was happiest near the sea he loved so much.
His love of adventure and enduring friendship were reflected in a memorable sailing trip he took in his 60s with his high school friend George, traveling from Massachusetts down to North Carolina. It was one of the many ways Stephen embraced life with energy, courage, and gratitude.
Stephen was the oldest of 14 children, and throughout his life he was known as a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, husband, friend, and neighbor. He had a generous nature and a steady presence, always helping others and making the lives of those around him better. His kindness and sense of responsibility left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Florence (Harrington) Downey and Margaret (Bates) Downey; and by two of his children, Richard Downey and Genevieve Commesso.
He is survived by his children Jean Downey, Margaret Millen, Dominic Commesso, Robert Commesso, and Mary Hingston. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, along with his many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends, all of whom will carry his memory forward with love.
Stephen F. Downey III will be remembered for his years of service, his love of the ocean, and the many ways he cared for the people around him. His life was one of purpose, compassion, and quiet strength, and his memory will remain a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
