“There’s a real housing crisis for this population in the state,” Henry said. “The state is overburdened – there are hundreds of individuals on the waiting list for group homes. Our community [in Scituate] is thriving.”
The program offers an “innovative housing model” for adults with intellectual and development disabilities and/or autism so they can “live, work, and socialize in an inclusive community” while enjoying independent apartment-style living.
Rents are paid by individual residents’ entitlements and their families. No state funding is available, according to Henry. One of the residency requirements is that a family member live within 15 miles, Nash explained. Staff members stay there overnight.
SAIL Home was created in October 2023 through the vision and dedication of families seeking a more independent, person-centered residential option for loved ones and welcomed its first residents last March. Some of the residents are from Hingham.
The funding for the total project investment of $4.25 million came from $1.75 million in Community Preservation Act money, significant other grants, private donations, and private financing, with free labor and other contributions from community members.
Select board member William Ramsey attended the opening of the Scituate SAIL Home and was impressed. “It’s a wonderful concept, a great team effort, and we’re looking forward to continuing this conversation,” he said.
The visit Henry and she paid to the board this week “starts the thought process and helps build awareness,” Nash said.
