This barn at 32 Middle Street has had an interesting history.
It was built as a boy’s school in 1829 at Hingham Centre. In 1861, it was moved aside and transformed into an Armory where, under Captain Luther Stephenson’s direction it was used to train militia for the Civil War. Moved again in 1875, it became an intermediate school.
In 1896, it was moved behind the Sparrow Nickerson House by School Superintendent Nelson Howard to be used as a barn and there it sits today.
