The Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (ASO) presents the Mark Zaleski Jazz Band in a special family-friendly open-air jazz concert this weekend – Sunday, August 30 at 4:00 PM at Glastonbury Abbey (16 Hull Street, Hingham). It’s the latest in the orchestra’s annual “At the Abbey” series.
Zaleski, who is ASO’s saxophonist and a professor of music at Berklee College of Music, says audiences should expect “music from the great American jazz songbook, music from my late great mentor Dave Brubeck and unique takes on the music of the 90s. We’re looking forward to having a lot of fun on stage!”
ASO flutist Brendan Ryan and pianist Chi Wei Lo – two audience favorites – will perform their own takes on classical and American folk pieces, before joining the band.
“This is the ultimate way to experience the beauty, joy and connection of live music – surrounded by community,” says ASO Executive Director Tammy Lynch. “Whether you’re a lifelong jazz lover or looking for a wonderful day out with family, there is something special for you in this concert.”
ASO invites everyone to bring a blanket or chairs, have a picnic, play some cornhole and come early to enjoy a delicious ice cream treat from Nona’s Homemade Ice Cream Truck.
“Every year for this concert we temporarily put away our symphonic sound and spotlight our individual musicians side-by-side with musicians known for performing other genres,” ASO Board President Paul Pecci said. “It’s always a great time.” Maestro Jin Kim will host the event, and all performers will be available to say hello after the concert.
