If you live on the South Shore, you’ve most likely spotted the brightly-hued, eye-catching sweatshirts with neon town pride names, such as HINGHAM, COH, NWL, and SCI. If you’re not familiar, allow us to introduce you to Lisa Popien, the founder and creative director behind Lisa Deming Design, a bespoke apparel brand. From embroidered fabric canvas hats to oversized batik bags to monogrammed sweatshirts for all ages, everything Popien creates is customized and personalized for the customer.

Her collection is numerous and ever-expanding. Selections include the signature Mama Crewneck, a personalized sweatshirt with relative names, such as “mama,” “dad,” “grandma,” or “fur mom,” alongside the names of children or pets. The Town Collection features South Shore town names for the ultimate local pride look, and the Hat Collection comes in a rope or traditional style, embroidered with local beaches, such as Minot, Sandy, or Rocky. Popien is adept at creating large or special orders, branded and personalized gear ranging from school and non-profit organizations, special getaways, or professional spirit days. Her sweatshirts are often seen in schools—her sweatshirts make excellent teacher and administration gifts— and have even been spotted amongst court seats at Celtics games.

Popien– a Massachusetts native–has been in the creative sector throughout her career, working in digital marketing. In 2020, she found her footing creating customized products on Etsy as a side passion project. After the birth of her third son in 2023, she was ready to take her business beyond ecommerce, where she could focus on connecting and making stronger relationships with her local South Shore community. She began crafting a few personalized sweatshirt designs and within weeks, the Lisa Deming Design brand took off. Now, Popien has sold over 4,000 items with nearly 50 products and apparel styles to choose from.

“I’ve always loved expressing myself through creating. Even as a child, I was drawn to arts and crafts. Now, I’ve forged deeper connections with my community. Most recently, I’ve designed and printed school gear for fundraisers or school spirit days, non-profit organizations, and items for charities. I’m blown away by the support and positivity I’ve encountered in the South Shore,” says Popien.

Everything can be custom-ordered through her site. Popien offers complimentary local delivery and nation-wide shipping for a modest fee, as well as gift cards. While the bulk of her business is online, if you need inspiration or simply want to bulk up on your sweatshirt collection for summer fire pit evenings, she frequents local farmers markets and pop-ups, and occasionally hosts seasonal pop-ups at her own home in Scituate. All details can be found on her Instagram account. Lisa Deming Design is also available for hire for special private shopping events, which are popular around the holidays.

Lisa is offering a dedicated giveaway with The Anchor featuring a Hingham and Cohasset hat and sweatshirt. Visit the Cohasset Anchor on Facebook and Instagram for more details and to enter to win!
