New Emergency Notification System Now Available To Hingham Residents: ‘This Is An Important Communication Tool’

August 13, 2026 By Carol Britton Meyer

Smart911 – a free automated reverse-911 system that sends community public safety alerts to residents’ phones/email addresses – is now available in Hingham, providing vital information as it happens.

“Smart911 is an important tool that helps us communicate with residents during emergencies,” Emergency Management Director Steve Murphy, who is also Hingham’s fire chief, announced recently.

However, “residents must register to ensure we have the most accurate contact information available. Taking a few minutes to enroll today can help ensure they receive critical information when it matters most,” Murphy said.

This emergency notification service, provided by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, allows emergency officials to quickly notify residents during emergencies, severe weather events, public safety incidents, evacuations, and other critical situations that require immediate attention. The system can send alerts to landlines, cell phones, text messages, and email addresses based on the information residents provide during enrollment.

Seeing the number 833-533-6163 displayed allows enrollees to identify where the call is coming from; to hear the last message delivered to a
phone, simply dial the number back.

Residents are encouraged to create a free Smart911 profile and provide contact information for all household members. Additional information, including special medical needs, mobility limitations, and emergency contacts, may also be included to assist first responders during emergencies.

It’s important for those enrolled in this service to keep their contact information up-to-date, including any change of address, to ensure alerts remain accurate to their location.
