For one week this August, the South Shore won’t have to travel to New York City to experience Broadway-caliber theater.
Instead, some of Broadway’s most recognizable performers including Tony Award nominees, Broadway veterans, television actors, and rising stars, will take the stage at Hingham’s Carr Amphitheater as Harbour Lights Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen from August 6–9. The limited-run production is directed by Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal, best known for originating the role of Roger in Broadway’s Rent, and features a cast that includes Tony Award nominee Orfeh, Broadway actor Chris Medlin (Mean Girls, Diana), America’s Got Talent semifinalist and social media sensation Victoria “Tory” Vagasy, Broadway veteran James Moye, actress, singer, writer and Executive Producer Jill Whelan (The Love Boat), national touring performer Dillon Klena, and emerging performer Kayla Louison, alongside Harbour Lights Theatre Artistic Director, Broadway producer and actor (Hairspray), Mickey White in the title role of Evan Hansen.
For local theater lovers, it’s a rare opportunity to experience performers who typically appear on Broadway and national stages in an intimate outdoor venue just minutes from home.
Harbour Lights Theatre, a nonprofit based on the South Shore started during Covid as a means to keep theater alive during the pandemic, has built its reputation on connecting New York’s professional theater community with local audiences. Founded by Mickey White, a Duxbury native, the company was created to bring professional musical theater to the region while giving Broadway artists a chance to perform in a unique setting.
“One of the things that makes Harbour Lights so special is the opportunity to bring the incredible artists I’ve met through my work in New York City back to the community that shaped me,” said White. “South Shore audiences get the chance to experience world-class talent right in their own backyard, while these artists get to step away from the city and spend time in one of the most beautiful places in New England during the summer – it’s like a Broadway adult summer camp for us and we can’t wait to bring this production to Hingham!”
This year’s production also marks a meaningful artistic connection for Pascal. He originated the role of Roger in Rent under director Michael Greif, who later directed the Tony Award-winning production of Dear Evan Hansen. Now, Pascal steps into the director’s chair to lead Harbour Lights Theatre’s interpretation of the musical, bringing his own Broadway experience to the South Shore stage.
“What drew me to this project was the passion behind it,” Pascal said. “Harbour Lights is creating something special by bringing professional theatre artists together with a community that is eager to embrace live performance. Dear Evan Hansen continues to resonate because it speaks honestly about connection, and I’m thrilled to collaborate with this cast and creative team to tell this story in such a beautiful setting.”
The talented team has been rehearsing in New York City as it prepares to bring the production to local audiences.
Since its Broadway debut, Dear Evan Hansen has become one of the most acclaimed musicals of the past decade, earning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. With themes of belonging, mental health, family, and human connection, the production has resonated with audiences around the world.
Performances will take place outdoors at the Carr Amphitheater in Hingham on Thursday, August 6, through Sunday, August 9. Evening performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee and a 7:30 p.m. performance on Sunday.
