The Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP) and the Weir River Water System (WRWS) are proud to launch a partnership that will enhance your utility service experience. As of July 1, 2026, HMLP has taken over customer service, billing and payment processing for all WRWS customers, streamlining services and ensuring a seamless transition for the community.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in providing local control, better service, and greater convenience for residents of Hingham, Hull, and North Cohasset. HMLP is a community-owned utility committed to putting people first and ensuring reliable, transparent, and responsive service.

Please be aware that water service will not be interrupted. This transition affects only customer service, billing and payment processing.

What’s Changing?
Starting July 1, HMLP will:
- Issue all water bills and manage payments for WRWS customers.
- Assume customer service responsibilities for the water system.
- Transition to monthly billing for water services, aligned with HMLP’s electric billing cycle.
- The first monthly water bill will arrive on August 1, 2026.
- Combine water and electric bills for Hingham customers, maintaining the same HMLP account number.
- Hull and North Cohasset customers will continue receiving separate bills, and they will receive a new account number on their first HMLP / WRWS bill.
- Maintain the same local support: same phone numbers, same team, and the same commitment to your satisfaction.
Key Dates
July 1, 2026: All water customer service, billing and payment functions shift to HMLP. Any outstanding WRWS balance will transfer to your HMLP account.
- July 2nd – 5th: HMLP office will be closed to allow for the cutover of phone lines and the transfer of customer, meter and billing data. It is possible that HMLP may close the afternoon of July 1st to accommodate the transfer and testing of the systems.
- July 15, 2026: For Hingham customers with water and electric service, your balance will include all outstanding water and electric charges combined. Pay in full by July 15 to qualify for the electric discount. Since the discount applies only to electric services, this deadline does not apply to customers in Hull or North Cohasset.
- August 1, 2026: First monthly water bill from HMLP mailed to all customers.
- For Hingham customers, this is a combined water and electric bill.
- Hull and North Cohasset customers will receive a separate HMLP water bill. Electric billing will remain with your current electric provider.
Payment Methods
- Use the same methods you currently use for your HMLP electric bill (online, automatic payment, mail, or in person).
- Automatic payments set up with Veolia will not transfer to HMLP. Customers must set up new automatic payments at HMLP.com after receiving their first HMLP / WRWS bill.
- Hull and North Cohasset customers can set up automatic payments once they receive their first HMLP / WRWS bill.
- Currently, the only method of payment accepted in autopay is a checking account.

This transition is about putting control back in the hands of Hingham residents while ensuring Hull and North Cohasset customers continue to receive dependable service.
