Blood Drive In Honor Of Hingham High School Student Planned For June 13; Celebrating Life And Making A Difference

June 1, 2026 By Carol Britton Meyer

Hingham Community Center and Hingham Baseball & Little League are hosting a blood drive in honor of Hingham High School student Alexander Rozanitis Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the community center’s ballroom, 70 South St.

Alexander was diagnosed last August with a rare form of cancer called Burkitt Lymphoma, which requires an aggressive treatment plan that for many patients requires blood transfusions.

“We had no idea how many people need blood transfusions every single day and were completely naive to the need and the shortage,” Amy Rozanitis, Alexander’s mother, told the Hingham Anchor. “We are extremely grateful for those who donate blood. I don’t think those who do realize they are truly saving lives.”

Alexander, his older brother, James, and his father, George, have been involved with Hingham Little League and Hingham High School baseball for years.

Alexander’s father coached Little League, and both boys played from Little League to Babe Ruth baseball and then went on to play for the high school, where Alexander is currently on the varsity baseball team.

Varsity baseball team captains Colin Garrity and Colman Donahue visited Alexander often and brought him small gifts to cheer him up during his treatment.

“The team was a huge support system to us throughout his fight and they approached us about running a blood drive in Alexander’s honor,” Rozanitis said. “We are honored and happy to be doing so. The high school also held one in his honor in February, but it was only open to staff and faculty. We knew there were many others wanting to donate, so this is the perfect opportunity.”

The blood drive is a chance to celebrate life and for donors to make a difference in the lives of patients in need by giving blood.

Blood is needed for many different kinds of patients – a young child with a rare blood disorder; a family member fighting cancer; a friend involved in a car accident; among many other scenarios.
