“Wonderful ambassadors for local food pantries” are the words Hingham Food Pantry Director Susan Kiernan used to describe the Stand Up Speak out group in a letter of appreciation for our recent food drive.

This is a “mission accomplished” for SUSO, a local community activist group that meets every Wednesday in Hingham Square. As a peaceful, idealistic, democracy-committed community of area residents, we conducted a food drive during this past November and December.

Our goal was simple: to recognize the most critical need in our immediate community of Hull, Hingham, and Weymouth and do good through action.

Donations of food, toiletries, gift cards, and cash were collected for the food pantry at Wellspring Multi-Service Center in Hull, the Weymouth Food Pantry, and the Hingham Food Pantry.

Thank you to the following organizations, local businesses, and community institutions who chose to lend a hand toward helping SUSO by accepting one of our food drop boxes:

  • Best Brother Records – Hingham Square
  • House of Art – Hingham Square
  • The Coop – Hingham Square
  • Nantasket Pharmacy – Hull
  • Weinberg’s Bakery – Hull
  • Hull Public Library
  • Hull Family Dental
  • A St. Liquors – Hull
  • Scoops – Hull
  • Hull Senior Center
  • Comella’s Restaurant – Hingham
  • Hingham Physical Therapy

Together with the patrons, clients, and customers at these locations, along with SUSO members and individuals who heard about the drive, we raised the following:

CASH: $1,717
GIFT CARDS: $635
FOOD and TOILETRIES: 55 shopping bags

“Your gifts of cash, gift cards, and food have helped us keep food on the table for many during a time of great uncertainty,” Pat Martin, Vice President of Programming, Wellspring told SUSO in a letter thanking them for hosting the food drive.

We know that actions to do good sustain us in equal measure to those we aid. Those actions define and affirm the democratic values that unite Americans: democracy, free speech, and due process for all. Making sure that we all have food on our tables is a beginning.
