Our town’s very own 4th Grade East Explorers are leading a toy drive to collect new items to be donated to the Tufts Medical Center Family & Child Life Services Department, where they will be distributed to young patients undergoing treatment for a wide range of medical needs. The goal is to donate as many new toys as possible so children can receive comfort and encouragement well beyond the holiday season.
Earlier this week, students participated in a special virtual visit with Catya, a Child Life Specialist from Tufts, who Zoomed in alongside Facility Dog Dottie to share what life is like for pediatric patients and how a toy drive can make a real difference during difficult procedures and long hospital stays. The students were incredibly engaged, asking thoughtful questions and learning how their efforts directly impact children in the hospital.
Now the students are taking the lead by creating posters, spreading awareness, and raising funds through yard work, bake sales, and other services to purchase toys for children receiving care. The toy drive will run through Friday, December 19th, when Cat & Dottie will join East’s All School Meeting to meet students and collect the donations.

The 4th grade at East School has a strong history of giving back through community service projects. In 2023, students raised funds to support a school in Hawaii devastated by wildfires. In 2024, they organized support for a school in North Carolina impacted by severe flooding.
If you would like to contribute, you can drop off a new, unwrapped toy at East School or at a collection bin located at 16 Chamberlain Run, Hingham. The Family & Child Life Services Department has also created an online wish list for easy giving: Tufts Pediatric Toy Drive Wish List.
The East 4th grade students appreciate your support!
