Hingham Civic Music Theatre invites theatergoers of all ages to “embrace their inner ogre” as it presents its joyous musical production of Shrek Jr. in a limited run, this weekend only at Sanborn Auditorium inside Hingham Town Hall.
Featuring a talented cast of young performers ages 6–14 from across the South Shore, the show promises all the laughs, heart, and adventure of the beloved story, while incorporating several playful and magical kid-friendly twists. Join Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, tiny tyrant Lord Farquaad, and a host of your favorite fairy tale characters as they sing and dance on their quest to true love, unexpectedly discovering along the way the power of friendship, acceptance, and the beauty we all have within us.

“Every rehearsal reminds me how extraordinary our cast and crew are,” says veteran director and choreographer Megg Rowan. “Their talent is remarkable, but it’s their excitement, imagination, and positive energy that have made this experience a real joy for me, and will absolutely delight our audiences. I truly believe it will be impossible for any theatergoer to leave a performance without a smile on their face!”
The show’s colorful costumes and imaginative sets bring Shrek’s universe to life in ways that young audience members will find especially captivating. Songs include crowd favorites like “I Know It’s Today,” “Big Bright Beautiful World,” and the raucous finale “I’m a Believer.”
The production will run for three performances: Friday and Saturday evening at 6:30, with a Sunday matinee at 2:30. The theater is elevator accessible and there is plenty of parking. Although organizers expect the show to sell out, there are still tickets available at HCMT.org. So whether you’re a longtime fan of the story and its music, or are simply looking for a fun and affordable outing for the entire family, Shrek Jr. offers a delightful addition to the holiday season.
