Get ready for a delicious adventure! Derby Academy’s Grade 6 students are proud to announce their annual musical production: a captivating rendition of Willy Wonka. The public is warmly invited to attend this free event and witness the culmination of months of hard work, artistic collaboration, and “pure imagination.” There are two opportunities to experience the magic, Wednesday and Thursday, November 19 and 20 at 6:00 PM on the campus of Derby Academy in Hingham, MA.
The annual Grade 6 musical is a cornerstone of the school’s Drama curriculum, requiring the participation of every single Grade 6 student. This program goes far beyond the stage, providing students with essential life skills.
“Our students are learning that teamwork isn’t just for the field,” says the show’s director Madison Pratt, “They are actively honing their public speaking skills, building confidence, and appreciating how to evoke emotion and express ideas through a written work. The persistence and artistic collaboration needed for this show will serve them in every subject.”
The journey to the stage has been intensive. Lead actors have been rehearsing almost every day, with the full cast meeting up to three times a week, including some weekend rehearsals to maximize preparation. The commitment spans across grade levels: the entire production is largely kid-run. Seventh and Eighth graders are crucial to the effort, working tirelessly to build and paint sets, create props, and handle all tech duties—including lights and sound—as well as managing the deck crew backstage. This cross-grade effort truly highlights how hard everyone is working to bring the magic to life.
Based on the beloved tale, Willy Wonka follows the eccentric candy manufacturer and his contest to award five lucky winners a tour of his famous factory and a lifetime supply of candy. However, as the children explore the magical but rule-bound factory, they learn that failure to follow the rules has consequences.
The story is a perfect fit for this age group, beautifully spotlighting the magic of “pure imagination” while delivering valuable lessons in being patient, humble, and kind. The themes of kindness and generosity have resonated with the cast, making this year’s company the perfect group to take on this wondrous task.
