The Hingham Education Foundation (HEF) hosted their 13th Annual Spelling Bee at Hingham Middle School on Sunday, November 9th . Teams of three, called hives, took to the stage with whiteboards and markers ready to spell their way to victory. This collaborative approach takes away a lot of the pressure of the traditional spelling bee format, giving kids a chance to shine academically, while also celebrating teamwork. The students have a lot of fun brainstorming clever names, picking team costumes, and being on stage with their friends.

Each grade level has three preliminary rounds, and the winning team from each advances to the last round where the three finalists compete to take home the win. Judges are dedicated teachers and community leaders who volunteer their time, and this year’s moderators were Superintendent Katie Roberts, former South School principal Mary Eastwood, and Selectman Bill Ramsey.

The 4th grade champions were coming off a win last year and were able to defend their title! The Spelling Sorcerers from South School – Gwen Cronin, Graham DeSchamp,
Amelia Kane

The Spelling Bee serves as one of HEF’s key annual fundraisers. As a parent and community run non profit, every dollar raised goes back into Hingham’s classrooms, building upon the $2.3 million in grants the organization has already awarded Hingham Public Schools.

This year’s winning words were quotable, deceive, and caramelize. Big congratulations to the winners and all the students who put themselves on stage and took part in a cherished town tradition!
