This is the Canterbury Street School which was built in 1810 and used as an elementary school until about 1940. It was used as District Wardens Post during WWII. District Wardens were stationed all over Hingham and worked out of the GAR Hall, Gov. Andrew’s House, the police station, the three fire stations, and the Canterbury and Fort Hill Schools. The District Warden’s job was to instruct other wardens in protecting people and property from air raids and to carry out air raid defense measures. All wardens were given instruction in first aid and incendiary bomb disposal and were expected patrol the neighborhoods on a regular basis. This photo is from a private collection.
