Way Back Wednesday: West Hingham 1903

One area of Hingham that has changed considerably in the past 100 years is West Hingham. Looking from a home on South Street, near Hersey, you can see that Baker’s Hill on the left horizon is bare, the church was Methodist, and the house at the corner of North and Thaxter Street across from the church was a single-family home. Now Baker’s Hill is covered with homes and trees, the church is Faith Nazarene, and the house has multiple families in it. Notice too moving up Thaxter Street are three other homes and then the West School which was torn down and is now the site of the Thaxter Park Housing Complex. Parallel to South Street the Old Colony Rail Road line ran above ground and an electric car line ran down North Street. This image came from a glass negative in the collection of the Hingham Historical Society.

  1. For a little history my family lived on Hersey after they moved here in 1947. I attended West school during my elementary school years.
Almost 80 years later I still live in the community.
