Way Back Wednesday: Acadian House at Derby Corner

July 23, 2025 by Geri Duff

This is a nice summertime view of the Acadian House so named for the French speaking exiles from Acadia, Canada who lived there for a short time, the name stuck even though it was originally owned by a Cushing and later a Hollis. When Michael J. Shilhan used this view in his book, When I think of Hingham, he cropped off an automobile on the left and the C.L. Wellington Furniture Shop that you can just make out behind the trees. Where this house stood was referred to as Derby Corner because if you look closely to the right, you can see a corner of the Derby Academy. The Acadian house, at 14 Main Street, was torn down in 1913 and the Town Offices built in its place. This is now the location of private offices including the office of the Parish of the First Parish Church, Old Ship. The photo is from the M. Alida Peterson scrapbook in the Hingham Historical Society archives.
