Way Back Wednesday: Fast Buck Roofers

July 9, 2025 Geri Duff

Many stories are told about Charlie Cushing’s Mobile Gas Station which was under the Buttonwood Tree at Hingham Centre. This was a casual gathering spot for Townies to share jokes and opinions. Back in the day when gas was 37 9/10 cents a gallon, it came time to replace the roof over the station. Here are John Stoddard, Paul Hickey and Charlie himself all smiles to do the job. You may not be able to make it out but the sign over the project reads: “Fast Buck Roofers Another Leakey Roof installed.” This photo is from the archives of the Bare Cove Fire Museum.
